Both put you in the driver's seat instead of the passenger seat. That is the thing they share, and it is the main reason to book either — dune bashing is done to you, this is done by you.
Beyond that they are quite different, and the price gap is large enough to deserve an explanation.
The quad bike, AED 250
The Quad Bike Desert Safari is a 25-minute guided session on an open dune area. You get a helmet, goggles and a briefing, a marshal rides with the group, and hotel pickup and drop-off are included.
A quad is a four-wheeler you sit on, motorbike-style. It is easy — thumb throttle, brake, that is most of it. People who have never ridden anything are comfortable within a couple of minutes.
You can extend the ride by 30 minutes for AED 120, add GoPro footage for AED 100, or bolt on the evening camp with BBQ dinner for AED 90.
The buggy, AED 900
The Dune Buggy Adventure is two hours in a proper machine: roll cage, harness, side-by-side seating so a passenger can come with you. Helmets, goggles and a harness briefing are included, and a lead marshal and support vehicle run with the group.
You go further and into bigger dunes than the quad session does — there is a ridge stop about an hour in.
Where the price difference goes
Three places, and it is worth being direct about it:
Time. Two hours against 25 minutes.
The machine. Buggies are expensive to buy and expensive to maintain in sand, with roll cages, harnesses and real suspension.
The terrain. More support is needed to take people into the bigger dune field, which is why there is a marshal and a support vehicle rather than just a marshal.
Whether that is worth three and a half times the price depends entirely on how much you want to drive.
The option most people should consider first
You do not have to book a separate day for either.
Any of our desert safaris will add a 25-minute quad ride for AED 150 per person. You get the dune bashing, the sunset, the camp and the dinner — plus your turn on a quad, in one evening.
For most visitors that is the right answer. The dedicated quad tour makes sense when you want the flexible slots and the longer session; the buggy makes sense when driving is the actual point of your day.
Practical notes
- Closed shoes are required. Not optional on either.
- Long hair tied back, and skip loose scarves.
- Riders must meet the minimum age and be sober.
- Wear what you do not mind getting dusty. You will get dusty.
- You are the driver, so your own judgement is part of the safety equipment. Ride within it.
