We run an evening safari in both emirates. They are similar trips with a few real differences, and the deciding factor is usually simpler than people expect.
Start with where you are sleeping
This is genuinely most of the answer. Both tours include hotel pickup and drop-off, but they pick up in their own emirate. Staying in Dubai, book the Dubai evening safari. Staying in Abu Dhabi, book the Abu Dhabi one.
Crossing between the two for a safari means adding roughly ninety minutes of motorway each way to a trip that is already six hours. It is not worth it, and the desert is not meaningfully better on the other side.
The price difference is real
The Abu Dhabi safari is AED 65 per person. The Dubai one starts at AED 100. Children are AED 55 and AED 80.
That gap is not a difference in quality — it reflects demand. Dubai is where most visitors stay and the market prices accordingly.
What is actually different
Dune bashing time. Dubai gives you a longer run in the dunes. Abu Dhabi is 35 to 40 minutes.
The dunes themselves. The Dubai tour runs into the Al Lahbab red dunes, which are the tall, deep-orange ones in every photograph of the UAE. Abu Dhabi's desert is paler, wider and emptier — flatter horizons, bigger sky, fewer vehicles in view.
Timing. Both pick up between 3:00 and 3:30 PM and return around 9:00 PM.
The camp. Both include the BBQ buffet with vegetarian options, unlimited soft drinks, camel rides, sandboarding and live shows. Dubai's camp adds henna painting and traditional dress photos.
Which desert is better to look at
If you want the postcard — steep red dunes, sharp ridges, the classic Arabian desert — that is Dubai.
If you want space and quiet, Abu Dhabi. Fewer operators run there and it shows: you spend more of the evening feeling like the only group out.
Doing both emirates in one trip
A common plan that works well: stay in Dubai, do the Dubai evening safari for the desert, and take the Abu Dhabi City Tour on a separate day for the Grand Mosque and the Corniche. That is AED 150 per person and covers the capital properly without you moving hotels.
Doing two desert safaris in two emirates is not something we would recommend. It is largely the same evening twice.
