The desert is why most people come. It is not the only thing worth a day. Three tours, three completely different landscapes, all with hotel pickup and all doable as a single day out.
Dubai in one day
The Dubai City Tour is AED 150 per person with an English-speaking driver-guide, and it runs 9:00 AM to about 2:30 PM. If you would rather not share, a private vehicle for up to six guests is AED 900.
The route does the thing most self-guided visitors get wrong: it starts in old Dubai. The creek, the souks, the spice and gold markets — the city that existed before the towers. Then Downtown around 11:30, the Burj Khalifa and the fountains, then the coast and the Burj Al Arab, and finally the Marina.
Doing it in that order matters. Downtown makes considerably more sense after you have seen what it replaced.
Extras if you want them: Burj Khalifa "At the Top" tickets at AED 180 per person, an abra ride across the creek for AED 20, or extend to a full eight-hour day for AED 300.
For a family of five or six, the private vehicle works out at roughly the same per head as the shared tour — with the day shaped around you instead of a fixed route.
Abu Dhabi and the Grand Mosque
The Abu Dhabi City Tour is AED 150 per person, AED 120 for children.
Pickup is 8:30 AM. It is a long day from Dubai, eight to nine hours, or five if you are already staying in Abu Dhabi. Entry to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is free, and it is the reason to go: white marble, forty-odd domes, and a scale that photographs badly and stands up in person.
Then the Corniche, the palace district, and Yas Island in the afternoon.
Dress code matters here. Shoulders and knees covered for everyone; women need a headscarf. The mosque lends abayas at the entrance, but bringing your own scarf skips the queue.
Optional entries: Louvre Abu Dhabi AED 65, Qasr Al Watan palace AED 65.
Hatta, which is not what anyone expects
The Hatta Mountain Safari is AED 150 per person, 8:00 AM to about 3:30 PM, or AED 900 for a private 4x4 if you want the day to yourselves.
Two hours inland from Dubai the flat desert ends and the Hajar mountains begin — bare grey rock, deep wadis, and the Hatta Dam, a reservoir of genuinely turquoise water sitting between the peaks. It does not look like the rest of the country and most visitors have no idea it is there.
The day includes the dam, the Heritage Village restored as an old mountain settlement, and the Wadi Hub with a lunch stop. You can add kayaking on the dam for AED 60 per person, or activity credit at the Wadi Hub for AED 100.
If you have four or five days in the UAE and one of them is spare, this is the one to spend it on.
And one that leaves the country
The Musandam day trip is AED 220 per person and goes further still — north up the coast, across the border into Oman, and out onto the fjords on a wooden dhow, with dolphins and a snorkelling stop.
It is thirteen to fourteen hours door to door and you need your original passport, so it is not a casual add-on. It is also the only day on this list where the landscape is water rather than sand or city.
Building a week
A shape that works, and roughly how we would order it:
- Day one: arrive, stay near the hotel
- Day two: Dubai City Tour — get your bearings in the city first
- Day three: evening desert safari — afternoon and evening
- Day four: Abu Dhabi — a long day, so keep the evening free
- Day five: Hatta, or a quiet day
City tours in the morning, desert in the afternoon. Never two long days back to back.
