The short answer is October to April. But people visit the UAE all year round, and a summer safari is perfectly good if you book the right one — so here is the longer version.
October to April: the easy months
This is desert weather at its best. Afternoons are warm rather than punishing, the evenings at the camp are pleasant, and every tour runs comfortably.
It is also when everyone else comes. December and January are the busiest weeks of the year, and if you are travelling then it is worth booking a few days ahead rather than on the morning.
Bring a jacket. From November onwards the temperature drops properly after sunset. Guests are consistently surprised by this — the desert does not hold heat, and by 8:00 PM at the camp a hoodie stops being optional. On the overnight safari in January, it is essential.
May to September: the hot months
Afternoons are genuinely hot. This does not rule out a safari, it just rules out standing around at 2:00 PM.
Two tours work well in summer:
The morning safari. Pickup at 8:00 AM, back by noon, finished before the worst of the day. The sand is cool, the light is clean and there is almost nobody else in the dunes. Four hours, AED 180.
The evening safari. The drive out is warm, but by the sunset stop at 5:30 the temperature is dropping fast, and dinner at the camp is comfortable. The car is air-conditioned throughout.
What we would avoid in July is a long midday city tour on foot. The desert in summer is manageable; a pavement in Downtown Dubai at 1:00 PM is less so.
What about Ramadan?
Tours run. Timings and camp arrangements shift, and the atmosphere in the evenings is genuinely lovely. Dates move each year, so message us with your dates and we will tell you exactly what is running.
Sunset moves more than you think
Worth knowing when you plan the day, because the whole evening is built around it. Sunset in Dubai is around 5:35 PM in late December and around 7:15 PM in late June — well over an hour and a half of difference.
In winter you are eating at the camp not long after dark. In summer the light lasts, and the sunset stop is later and longer. When you pick a date on our booking form, it shows you that evening's sunset time.
Rain and sandstorms
Rare, but real. The UAE gets a handful of proper rain days a year, mostly between December and March, and the occasional sandstorm.
If conditions are unsafe we move your tour to another day or cancel it, and you pay nothing — because you have not paid anything. That is the practical advantage of pay-on-the-day: weather is our problem, not a refund negotiation.
